Cut in Food Stamps Forces Hard Choices on Poor

Cut in Food Stamps Forces Hard Choices on Poor

Millions of poor Americans rely on food stamps money to pay their home rent and food. Congress made the largest cut in the food stamp program since started 1964, which affect more than 47 million people who rely on food stamp. The congress has dropped $11 from the program. Christopher Bean, the executive director of a Bronx food pantry, said that about 60 new families had visited the pantry in the past week because their food stamps had been cut. It has been just a few days and the poor people already suffering. However, to the government this mean saving $5 billion in the next year. The record showed that food stamps cost 78.4 billion in 2012. Food stamps are probable will be cut more in the coming years if Congress can agree on a new farm bill. The government should cut the program that aid some foreign countries such as Africa, and keep helping its own citizen. Also, the government should provide jobs with good income for these poor people.

  1. Cutting Food Stamps is unwelcome news. Although it is not a dramatic decrease, cutting Food Stamps may directly affect the beneficiaries’ quality of meals. The main issue of cutting Food budget for the poor is not about starvation, but about health and nutrition. Usually, when people cannot afford, they make a decision to sacrifice their quality of life, and in this case, the victim would be nutrition. According to the news article, a half of the beneficiaries of Food Stamps are children and childhood is very important period to develop their body and brain. Therefore, I think cutting Food Stamps is not thoughtful decision and hope that the government would find ways to provide good balanced nutrients to the poor and their children.
